Beard Oil, Beard Butter, and Beard Balm DIY
Ever since I made my simple soap recipe, the Bearded Rooster has been wanting me to make beard oil, beard butter, and beard balm. He takes great care of his beard and uses all of these products daily.

So, I started researching different products and looking at recipes and what goes in them.
Although you can use different types of oils, I found the most common ones used were coconut, sweet almond oil and jojoba oil.
Sweet almond oil is nourishing to your skin and helps boost collagen production. Additionally, it has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce swelling and prevent ingrown hairs. If you have a tree nut allergy, avoid using it.
Jojoba oil is similar to your skin’s own sebum, the natural oil your skin produces. It’s hydrating and will help prevent clogged pores. Using this oil, your skin will actually make less oil.
Coconut oil has many medicinal properties. It’s a natural moisturizer and used by many people for wound care.
The Bearded Rooster likes using all three products, beard oil, beard butter, and beard balm. Although the beard balm is probably his least favorite.

Beard Oil is absorbed quickly and prevents dryness, itchiness, and flaky skin (dandruff or breadruff). It hydrates the beard hair plus the skin underneath the beard.
Beard Butter will deep condition the beard helping to keep it healthy. It contains shea butter so it’s thick and creamy, like a lotion. It’s great for styling.
Beard Balm contains beeswax and so it’s even thicker. It provides the same conditioning but will provide more shape and tame the wild hairs.
The Beard Oil was the easiest to make. When I first made it, I measured everything. Now, I just reuse his bottle and eyeball it. I choose jojoba and sweet almond oil. Some people will do a mixture of half and half. The jojoba oil per ounce is more expensive than the sweet almond oil so I used ¼ jojoba and ¾ sweet almond oil. In his 1 oz bottle, I did 10 drops of essential oils.
How to Use Beard Oil, Beard Balm, and Beard Butter
Although you can use it any time, the best time is after a warm shower. The pores on your face are open and the hair follicles will absorb the oil better.
Store in a dark bottle or container to protect against UV rays. When making any of the products, check the expiration date of the oil you use. Some can go rancid.
Regular soap can strip your skin’s natural oils so using these products will help that. The Bearded Rooster loves my simple soap but if you aren’t into soap making, try this one, especially for beards. It has the same ingredients that my recipe has in it.
Beard products can be a little expensive. If you have a man in your life with a beard, making these can save you quite a bit of money plus you know what goes in them (no artificial ingredients) and with essential oils, they also smell great!
Turn this into a special gift, add a beard comb, cologne, candy, and even some beer then put it in a cute basket or crate.
Some of my favorite combinations
For 1 ounce beard oil:
- 5 drops peppermint
- 2 drops tea tree oil
- 2 drops orange
or
- 3 drops lavender
- 2 drops eucalyptus
- 2 drops lemongrass
or
- 5 drops tea tree oil
- 3 drops peppermint
Essentials oils if applied directly can irritate the sensitive facial skin so adding in the beard oil will help.
I’m a little slow to get on the essential oils bandwagon and still learning about their health benefits. I love rosemary and frankincense also. If you have a favorite combination, please be sure and let me know.
