So what do I do to keep my chicken coop clean?\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before cleaning, remove all feeders and waterers and open any doors and windows.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scrape off Poop from the Roost Bars and Poop Boards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First I scrape any poop off the roost bars and poop boards. You want to be careful to not damage the wood. Your birds could get a laceration or puncture wound and these types of injuries frequently turn into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poultrydvm.com\/condition\/bumblefoot\">Bumblefoot<\/a>. I\u2019ve used all sorts of things to clean the roost bars but recently I started using an ice-scraper. It works great and is gentle on the boards.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remove Bedding Material and Add to Compost.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remove all the bedding material from the Hen House and add to the floor of the run under the roost bars. Since our girls roost at night in the run, the bedding in the Hen House isn&#8217;t really soiled.&nbsp; Then what is under the roost bars goes into the compost. Kind of a cycle.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sweep all Surfaces.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweep all the surfaces. Also, look for any holes or openings where predators can get in. Additionally, I\u2019m looking for mites.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spray Surfaces with Vinegar and Water&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I use a 1:1 solution, equal parts water and vinegar.&nbsp; Do you notice a slimy film on any surfaces? This is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/57295-biofilms.html\"> biofilm<\/a> which can contain bacteria and needs to be removed so the area can be disinfected.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you still have any remaining dirt or poop after scraping, scrub if necessary. Rinse and spray vinegar again.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let sit for 20 minutes to disinfect.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people like to use bleach, but I\u2019ve read that it can interact with the ammonia in chicken poop&#8230;I\u2019m not really sure about this, but I like that the vinegar is a natural disinfectant. Now when I\u2019ve seen evidence of<a href=\"https:\/\/chikchikchicken.comindex.php\/2019\/06\/27\/mice-and-rats-in-the-chicken-coop\/\"> <strong>mice in the coop<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> I use bleach.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wash Feeders and Waterers.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I use Dawn dishwashing liquid. It\u2019s been proven to be safe for animals. After washing, I set them out in the sun.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hose Everything Down and Let Dry Thoroughly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chikchikchicken.comwp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/clean-coop-2.jpg?resize=311%2C308&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"products to clean your chicken coop\" class=\"wp-image-2330\" width=\"311\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chikchikchicken.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/clean-coop-2.jpg?w=472&amp;ssl=1 472w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chikchikchicken.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/clean-coop-2.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chikchikchicken.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/clean-coop-2.jpg?resize=300%2C297&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hose down roost bars, nest boxes, coop floor, etc. We switched to mulch in our run a few months ago, so I also hose that down also. I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ll do this in the winter but now while it\u2019s so hot our ground is cracking. The mulch really helps.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Freshen up the Dust Bath. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While everything is drying, I usually freshen up the<a href=\"https:\/\/chikchikchicken.comindex.php\/2018\/08\/29\/dust-bathing\/\"> <strong>dust bath area<\/strong><\/a>. I loosen the dirt, remove any poop, and add wood ash and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/30QhDpv\">food-grade DE<\/a>. I also like to add herbs on occasion. Right now, I sprinkle sage or lavender because that\u2019s what I have on hand. But I also use rosemary,&nbsp;oregano, and mint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spray Area with Poultry Spray.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spray nest box, roost bars and any other areas with poultry spray. There are a lot of great products on the market. I use <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/30OeJSc\">Manna Poultry Spray <\/a>in the nest box and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/35gUy2P\">Permethrin 10<\/a> on the roost bars. It\u2019s great for killing roost mites that may have been hiding during cleaning.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add New Bedding&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I replace the bedding in the hen house and occasionally I add extra mulch to the run depending on how much I\u2019ve removed.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people do deep litter method which doesn\u2019t have to be cleaned out as frequently. Being in Texas, deep litter doesn\u2019t work well for us.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sprinkle DE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I sprinkle<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diatomaceousearth.com\/\"> food grade DE<\/a> in the edges of the hen house, in the bedding and around the fence.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chikchikchicken.comwp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/img_4486.png?resize=286%2C295&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Chicken Chores \" class=\"wp-image-1111\" width=\"286\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chikchikchicken.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/img_4486.png?w=618&amp;ssl=1 618w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chikchikchicken.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/img_4486.png?resize=290%2C300&amp;ssl=1 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fill up Waterers and Feeders and Return to the Coop.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I do this monthly but, of course, will do more frequently if needed.&nbsp; Many people do a deep clean in Spring and Fall that is similar to my routine. In the winter, I don\u2019t remove as much of the bedding as I do in warmer months, giving the chickens something to bed down in or scratch around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also clean the coop weekly.
