Get your Chicken Supplies at Dollar Tree

A new Dollar Tree went in about a mile from my house. I had never really shopped at one before. And man, was I surprised! We ran in to get a gift bag and I was shocked at the great deals. The more I looked I realized I could get a lot of chicken supplies at Dollar Tree.

So what did I pick up?

You can get lots of items for your chicken first aid kit. At Dollar Tree, everything is a $1. I’d been to other dollar stores where items were priced at increments of a $1, so I was shocked that everything was truly $1.

Some of the products are smaller versions of what you’d find at the regular store. Hopefully, you will never need to use these. So if they expire, you won’t feel too guilty about throwing them away.

Tub for bathing. Occasionally you may need to wash your chickens vent area if poop is stuck. or use to help cool your chicken off if it’s overheated. Also great for storing your supplies in.

Triple antibiotic ointment – generic Neosporin. Use for wound care.

Epsom salt – 16 oz bag. Use for bumblefoot or an egg bound chicken.  You can get the same size from Walmart or your local pharmacy for $1.50 to $5 on average. Walmart also carries an 8lb bag for $5. This is a great deal but I didn’t want to keep that much on hand.

Aspirin – for pain management. Mix 5 aspirin (regular not baby) in a gallon of water.

Puppy pee pads – I saw a suggestion to use these in your sick bay area. When Hazel had Flystrike (which caused a big hole in her vent area), we didn’t want to use pine shavings. I was afraid the pine shavings would stick to her sore and cause more problems. So, we used old bath towels. After a day of her pooping on the towels, they were gross. I was able to salvage a couple but I threw several away. I’ve now added these pads to our first aid kit. There are 5 in a package for $1. When I’m ready to change, I can just toss out.

Hydrogen Peroxide – I got a 32 oz bottle. You can get this for $1-$2 at other stores also. You may already have this at home but I love having one just for the chickens. That way when I need it, I don’t have to go looking for it.

Hemorrhoid cream – .9 oz tube. Hopefully, you will never have to use this for prolapse vent. Get the original without pain relief. Other stores range $2-$6 for a 1 oz tube.

Scrub brush – to clean the coop. I’ve had mine for about four months. My first thought was when it got nasty I’d just throw away and get another one. So far it’s held up.

Ice scraper – perfect for scraping poop off the roost bars. I use every couple days to keep the poop from accumulating.

Spray Bottle – same price as Walmart. I have one mixed up with vinegar and water and another with bleach water that I used to clean up after mice in the coop

Non-Stick Gauze Pads – They had 2×2 and 4×4 Curad pads that came 10 in a box. I picked up a couple of both sizes.

They also had Vaseline, rubbing alcohol, saline, Tums, and SuperGlue. I’d already purchased these for my first aid kit.

Several of these products you can use for your family and as I said earlier, you may already have them. I really like having a separate first aid kit for the chickens. When I need something for them, I don’t want to be searching the house or realize someone used all of it. The Dollar Tree is a great way to set up one and not invest much money. Be sure and check out my post for other items I have in mine.

So, I’ve been going to the Dollar Tree every few weeks just to browse around. I’m not sure why I’d never been to one before but I’m sure glad we stopped that day.

Not only can you get chicken supplies at Dollar Tree but they carry a lot of other products. My blogging friend at The House That Never Slumbers recently wrote a post about swimming pool hacks with items she purchased there.

If you decide to go, let me know what fantastic deals you find.

Oh, and if you’re going to the movies, get your candy there first!

  1. I love finding bargains at the dollar store! And, you’re right, you have to know what to look for as some items are packaged in smaller amounts than you would find at other stores. But, I have to say, I still love coming out of the store with several items and not spending much money for them! And, I love reading about your chickens, we are hoping to have some of our own one day!

  2. I hadn’t found the puppy pads there, but I’ll keep an eye out for them now! Everything else you’ve listed I have in my preps. I love the packages of latex gloves from the Dollar Tree! I buy some every time I go in and keep them stashed in my blackout boxes, first aid kits, kitchen, and cars. I love the Dollar Tree for their medical supplies.

    1. I haven’t seen the latex gloves. Definitely, will look for those. Sometimes, it’s hard to take everything in that’s there.

  3. Wow… I never knew that one would need some supplies too for their chicken! I wish to have some chickens someday! ☺

    1. They are really easy to take care of and it’s very rewarding. The fresh eggs are great!

  4. Those type of stores are fantastic for essentials like that, aren’t they? What a brilliant idea using the puppy pee pads. The last thing you’d want is pine shavings being stuck on a sore.

  5. Wow, you got some great bargains for keeping your chickens healthy. I didn’t realise dollar tree sold all of those things.

  6. I had no idea of the things that could go wrong with chickens! We talk sometimes about getting them and your posts are great for learning about what is necessary with chickens. I feel more able to make an informed decision now!

  7. So I have no chickens, but I have to admit I am amazed at how much you can find at the dollar store for them! And it totally makes sense they need a first aid kit! That’s kind of adorable, for a city girl like me to read about….

  8. That’s so funny 😂 I never realized you had NEVER been to a Dollar Tree. Yes, they are probably the only store where everything is actually a dollar. This post kinda scared me a bit though. I still eventually want chickens but I couldn’t if they get so many Illnesses and such a lot of the time. I am already stretched so thin. I’m wondering how many you have.

    1. We have six chickens and they’ve been really healthy! We’ve been lucky and only dealt with a few illnesses over the years. We do spoil the girls, even with treats, I only spend about $20-$25 a month on them.
